During this week we reviewed the Grammar Translation method, one of the first teaching-method using by humanity, better said, one of the most widely used ones around the world. This method derives from the classic way of teaching Latin and Greek in ancient times, and even during the 20th century it was still used in language academies.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
- Students learn grammatical rules and then apply those rules by translating sentences using both target and source language.
- Lessons are taught in the source language of the students.
- Less attention to how words are pronounced.
- Students read a lot of theoric information.
PROS AND CONS
Pros
- This method is maintained as the reference system in the learning of the second language, students learn better how to understand abstract concepts, the proper grammatical structure of sentences, and the acquisition of vocabulary.
- It is an easier way to teach languages.
- Students develop a better way to analyze complex text with complex language.
Cons
- Lack of pronunciation practice.
- Poor conversational skills.
- Students might develop a dependency on translation.
ACTIVITIES IN THIS CLASS
In this activity, the teacher asked us about our favorite book phrase, our favorite Bible quote, our favorite poem, and our favorite musical phrase in Spanish and English. The objective of this practice was to see how these sentences could have a different impact on us depending on the language in which they were written as some products can be perceived differently depending on the language.
