The Suggestopedia method is based on the power of suggestion in learning; the idea is that positive suggestion would make the learner more receptive and, in turn, stimulate learning. This method was created by Georgi Lozarnov, a Bulgarian psychotherapist whose main belief was that embarrassment and stress could stop students from learning, so he thought of using music to facilitate this process.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

In order to create an atmosphere of tranquility, Suggestopedia makes use of soothing music and creates an atmosphere of trust and calm. Also, the teacher and student have a relationship similar to that of parent and child.

Unlike other methods, this one is not so much based on what to teach and how to teach it, but on the classroom environment and the feelings of the students.

PROS AND CONS

Pros

- This method allows students to be more independent in their learning process.

- The quiet environment is optimal for learning

- There is not much emphasis on error correction

- You can add more songs to your playlist (xd)

Cons

- Music, while it can be a good thing, can be distracting if students like it too much or hate it. Neutral music should be played

- Maybe some students will ask to play Taylor Swift songs (gross)

ACTIVITIES IN THIS CLASS

For this class, the professor played relaxing music. But calm music was not the only kind of music we used for this class, we also used some kid music which we used to write down some vocabulary in our notebooks. In this case, we used a farm song from which we extracted farm animal names to match the ones we previously wrote in our notebooks.

Then, the teacher played a song called "Lovin' You" by Minnie Riperton. He asked us to draw what the song made us feel... most of my classmates drew landscapes like beaches, meadows, gardens, etc., in my case I heard that song in a romantic comedy called "Bridget Jones's Diary", to remind me that made me laugh, and drew myself on a date with my musician crush (lol) Per Ohlin.
