This method, also known as the "army method", was developed during World War II. It arose out of the need to make soldiers communicate more effectively since it was crucial that everyone knew how to communicate regardless of their mother tongues.
This system is characterized by providing repetition patterns and mimicry. It is based on the Coleman Report's idea that it was impractical to teach oral skills and that reading should become the focus. The Linguistic and Behavioral methods were also important parts to develop this method.
The ALM is also based on the belief that humans can be trained by using a system of reinforcement.
Students analyze the syntax, grammatical structure, phonology, and comparison between the target language and the mother tongue.
